Timothy Shanahan

Dr. Timothy Shanahan served as a member of the Advisory Board of the National Institute for Literacy under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and he helped lead the National Reading Panel, convened at the request of Congress to evaluate research on the teaching of reading-- a major influence on reading education. He also chaired the National Literacy Panel for Language Minority Children and Youth and the National Early Literacy Panel, and he helped write the Common Core State Standards. He is a 2007 inductee to the Reading Hall of Fame, and has been awarded the William S. Gray Citation for Lifetime Achievement, the Albert J. Harris Award for outstanding research on reading disability from the International Literacy Association (ILA), the P. David Pearson Award for Scholarly Impact from the Literacy Research Association (LRA), the Milton D. Jacobson Readability Research Award, the Amoco Award for Outstanding Teaching, and the University of Delaware’s Presidential Citation for Outstanding Achievement. He co-developed Project FLAME, a family literacy program for Latino immigrants, which received an Academic Excellence Award from the U.S. Department of Education. His 2012 article, “The Common Core Ate My Baby and Other Urban Legends” received the Distinguished Achievement Award for Learned Article from the Association of Educational Publications. Tim is the author or editor of more than 200 publications on literacy education, including the books, Teaching with the Common Core Standards for the English Language Arts, Early Childhood Literacy, and Developing Literacy in Second-Language Learners. Tim is past president of the International Literacy Association, he has served as the director of reading for Chicago Public Schools, and is a former first-grade teacher. Tim is now Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chi­cago where he was Founding Di­rector of the UIC Center for Literacy.
